Texas Tech junior Oscar Floren has become the first golfer in program history to receive PING All-America First Team honors. He is the first to be recognized by a Golf Coaches Association’s team since Bryan Novoa was named to the third team in 1996. The PING All-America program has been honoring collegiate golfers annually since 1958.
Floren was a key player for the Red Raiders this season as he appeared in all 12 tournaments, carding a stroke average of 71.3. His list of accomplishments includes tying a single-season Texas Tech record with three tournament wins and leading the nation in par-five scoring with a 4.56 rating.
“I’m very proud of him in reaching his goals, because not everyone achieves the goals that they have set,” says head coach Greg Sands. “I think it’s great for the program, and gives the underclassmen someone to look up to. All around it’s exciting to accomplish that.”
Floren’s wins at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships, Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate and Aggie Invitational helped propel him to a top ten national ranking. Additionally, his play was instrumental in the Red Raiders ranking as high as ninth during the season and competing in the NCAA Championships for the sixth time in the program’s history.
