Texas Tech University and Angelo State University have been named among the “Top 10 Online Colleges in Texas” by BestSchools.com, an online college guide for prospective students that ranks and profiles online schools and academic programs in all 50 states.

Overall, Texas Tech University ranked No. 2 and Angelo State University ranked No. 3 on the list of top online colleges in Texas behind only the University of Houston. To be eligible for the rankings, schools must be accredited and not-for-profit, offer at least one fully online bachelor’s degree and voluntarily disclose curriculum and tuition information on their website.

"Online education and distance learning has never been more important in the evolving landscape of higher education, and this honor shows our commitment to providing a quality education to our students no matter their location," Chancellor Robert L. Duncan said. "Congratulations to both of our great universities on this recognition and their innovative efforts to deliver a first-class, online academic experience."

The actual data for the rankings is collected through interviews with school administrators and faculty. Criteria includes each school’s online program history, how the program and courses are developed, who teaches the online courses, what strategies are in place to ensure a quality student experience, and the vision for long-term growth.

According to BestSchools.com, "Our research into Texas Tech University gave us a lot to like. Their 59 percent graduation rate [online] and outstanding 81 percent retention rate [online] place them at the top of the list in those categories for the state of Texas. They offer an especially large selection of online degrees...and do so at a cost well below the state average." Additionally, "...Their placement on the Forbes list backs up our impression that they’re a solid choice for students interested in getting a good ROI."

Texas Tech University's Worldwide eLearning online education program offers a variety of degrees from nuclear engineering to personal finance, general studies, plant and soil sciences and family and consumer sciences education. Collectively, Worldwide eLearning provides more than 40 online and regional programs, certificates, and certification preparation programs:

According to BestSchools.com, “All of the colleges in our top three do pretty well when it comes to offering an affordable tuition rate, but Angelo State University beats the others by a long shot. They’re easily one of the best choices in the state for any student prioritizing value for the money.” Also, “ Angelo State University has been able to recreate a student experience online that would be typically found in a face-to-face environment by holding students to the same standards and making the same resources and support available in an online environment as are available in person.”

Angelo State University offers online bachelor’s degree programs in border security; border and homeland security; and intelligence, security studies and analysis. Thirteen online master’s degree programs are also available in various subjects, including applied psychology, business administration, criminal justice, curriculum and instruction, education, homeland security, security studies and nursing. Various undergraduate and graduate certificate programs are also available totally online.

The other schools ranked among the Top 10 Online Colleges in Texas are, in order from 4-10, University of Texas at El Paso, UT-Austin, Texas A&M University, University of Dallas, Dallas Baptist University, West Texas A&M University and Sam Houston State University.
